"5 chevrons pointing down & 1 pointing up".
This sounds more like US insignia than British.

I have a silver colored metal tie tack with what looks like 5 chevrons pointing down & 1 pointing up w/small indistinct symbol at the very top. British? What rank? Jerrie

Remembering that in the British Army, Regimental Sergeant Major is an appointment, not a rank:-

The badge you display as the insignia of a Regimental Sergeant Major is in fact the rank badge of a Warrant Officer Class 1. Not all Warrant Officers Class 1 are appointed Regimental Sergeants Major.

How do you differentiate between a Warrant Officer Class 1 who has been appointed Regimental Sergeant Major and a Warrant Officer Class 1 who holds a different appointment?

"Sergeant Major is no longer a rank in the British Army" - this was never a rank but an appointment, the correct rank is Warrant Officer Class 2, the job carried out is CSM, BSM etc

Royal Anglian Regt.: In No.2 Dress, do seargents where the white courlene belt with the brass buckle or the chrome plate with regimental badge? I understand that colour seargents where the plate, but I'm not sure of seargents.
