According to Mayan myth, the earth has been destroyed several times in the pas and each time only two people have been allowed to survive to repopulate the earth. I dont remember if there were any requirements to be chosen or if it was random (random up to a point because the two people would need to be one male and one female and live close to each other otherwise they might die before they could pro-create).
